It was about 8:30 this morning when I got the call (11:30am EST). Chris' Phase Out Multi Test was this morning and today's test would determine whether or not Chris would be able to continue thru the Program. I answered the phone and just said "Just give it to me straight..." and then, all I could hear was screaming & cheering. All I could say excitingly was "Does that mean you passed!?" He didn't have much time to talk, but said "YES! I PASSED!!! The entire class passed!!!" I couldn't believe it!! He is just so happy!
I talked with him a few hours later and he gave me the low-down on all the details of the test. He was the 2nd to last guy to go and had to wait in the locker room showers as one-at-a-time each Airman was called into the pool to take the test.
Chris waited anxiously until his name was called...by this time 5 people have gone before him.He came onto the "scene" and saw a "crash site" with three victims - one man hanging onto a raft, one guy just floating in the water without a flotation, and a pilot all tangled in a parachute. He followed all of the proper procedures and started getting the people out of the water. About half way through the test, and as he was getting the people out of the water, all of a sudden one of the guys turned on him and begun to drag Chris under the water. The man's arm was tight around Chris' throat, he tore the mask off Chris' face and started to drown Chris. Chris quickly regained control of the situation and that was that.
Within about 20 minutes the test was over...Chris wasn't sure if he passed or failed. He was excused and left the pool area. - The last airman, who was still waiting in the locker room shower area, finally walked into the pool area for his test.
After the last guy took the test all of the Airmen were called back into the pool building and told to line up in formation along the edge of the pool. As they stood there they didn't know whether or not that had passed or failed; they anxiously awaited the words of their instructor. Without a definite yes or no the instructor started with "I am thoroughly impressed with you guys today!" --- and then, with just those words, they knew the good news! He continued "I'm so proud of you guys, and for that reason all of you get a 'GO' today!" Still in formation the class yelled out a happy "HOO RA CHIEF (um, I forgot his name)"
Everyone was so excited and the class went out tonight to celebrate. I believe they'll be going out over the weekend to celebrate even more!!!
----------------
So, what's next...?? Well, during the next 8 weeks Chris will learn how to sew. He'll be able to stitch parachutes, rafts, follow a pattern, make things, etc. The class will also maintain a weekly exercise routine, but it is no where near the intensity of the last 8 weeks. Oh, and there will be no more tests based on results in the pool...well, there is an exit exam on the last day which will consist of a test in the pool...but, word on the street is that it is pretty easy.
Oh, and within the next 4-5 weeks we should know where we will be stationed...yikes!

Phase-Out Multi
This week and next week are going to be the most important weeks of the program thus far. These next two weeks mark the end of the swimmer-stage and then they will be moving onto the sewing stage of the program. Yes, their training in the pool with continue for the next 8 weeks, but it will not be so intense.
The final test that will make-or-break a swimmer continuing, is something called a "Phase-Out Multi." This test is a simulation with multiple victims, debris, and problems - it is as if you have arrived to a crash-site and the swimmer needs to assess the situation and get the victims out of there safely and according to the proper procedure.
Today Chris had a successful practice test. He was actually the ONLY ONE to complete the entire test in the allotted time!! All of the other 6 remaining people in his class failed the practice test for one reason or another.
In the practice test they simulated a boat crash with 6 people in the pool. Each person had a different role/personality. The swimmer (Chris) had to assess the situation and determine who should get helped first, second, third, and so on. And then , of course, get himself out of there unharmed. To help simulate the crash, they have many different things in the pool to represent debris...you are not allowed to touch any of the debris, as in a real situation you may not know exactly what the debris floating really is. Chris got all of the victims out in the proper order, and got himself out in 19 minutes. They had 20 minutes to complete the test. GOOD JOB!!!
So, as I mentioned, this was just the practice test. The REAL DEAL is next Wednesday. Chris knows a little bit about the crash situation and there will only be 3 victims involved...a downed pilot with a parachute, a calm person, and an aggressive person. If Chris can pass this test it is pretty much a SURE THING that he'll be passing the course and graduating in May.
Anyway, so keep him in your thoughts and prayers!!
The final Phase-Out Multi is next Wednesday. So, for all of you out there who wished you could help him along in his journey...you can! I'm sure he could use all your prayers and good thoughts on Wednesday and leading up to the big day.

The "Extra" Day
Well...we were supposed to return home on Monday. We had planned the trip so that Lisa could come along and not miss any school...she has school on Tuesdays & Thursdays. So, we were supposed to arrive at LAX Monday night at 11:45pm.
We had a rough morning getting ready to go to the airport. We didn't get in from DC, the night before, until after 3am...and then we were up all night with the baby. (Yes, I have been sleep deprived for 5 months...when does this stop?) Anyway, we were up late and rushing to get packed. We arrived at the airport, returned the car, and walked to check-in. When we got there the lady informed us that all flights have been delayed due to bad weather.
To make a long story short...because our plane was delayed we were going to miss our connector and there wasn't another connector that would get us to LA until the following afternoon! OMG!! I was in shock! Lisa was going to have to miss school and I felt so bad. Nothing like this has ever happened before. It would have been one thing if we were already planning to stay, I mean, we got a good deal on the car & hotel and now we were going to have to pay the "desperate gouged rates!" -- I was just shocked!
On the bright side we were able to spend one more day with Chris. So, we decided to get a hotel in Elizabeth City... the city where Chris is doing his training. Chris gave us a great tour of the small town and we ate at the only sushi restaurant for miles. We ended up getting a really good deal on a room at the new Marriott in town. And, everything worked out for the better.
I guess not all "bad things" are bad things???

Visiting Washington DC
Sunday we drove up to Washington DC...Me, Emily, Chris, Lisa, and Chris' friend from school Alex. We drove the 3 hours there and back in our small, rented Ford Focus...needless to say, it was cramped.
Chris had wanted to visit DC ever since I went with my family over the summer. It was sad that we only had the afternoon to spend there, as we were a bit late getting out in the morning. But, I think we got to see just about everything...well, of the monuments anyway. I think Chris would still like to go back and be able to spend more time there; possibly visit the Archives, White House, Capitol, etc. We took a monument night tour through the city and got to see everything all lit up. It was a bit cold, and although Emily didn't get out of the bus for all the monument stops, we had her in a snug snow suit which made her look like Maggie Simpson. (If you've seen the episode then you'd know what I'm talking about.)
Overall it was a good day and something that every military person should go and see!

Emily's 1st Plane Ride -- a Red-Eye to North Carolina
Well, we're here in North Carolina with Chris. It's been a nice long extended visit to the East Coast. Right now we should be on a plane back to LAX, however due to inclement weather, we are still here in North Carolina. (We'll be taking another plane tomorrow afternoon)

We arrived early Friday morning after a VERY LONG FLIGHT. Emily was such a trooper during the flight and slept through the entire thing!! On our red-eye flight to Charlotte (layover) we were stuck in the back with 4 babies. All of the babies, except one, slept the entire plane ride. And, of course, the cranky baby was right in front of us!! OMG!!! The baby cried THE ENTIRE FLIGHT!! I didn't get any sleep!
I kind of felt bad for the single mother stuck with this trouble child, but she wasn't doing much to try to solve the situation. The 20-something gang-banger mother was there with her 6 month old, that looked as much like a thug as her mom did. The mother was seated in the middle of two businessmen who were more then annoyed! She sat there sternly yelling at the child and grunting every time the child wouldn't sit still. She would frustratingly throw the baby from one arm to the other as if the little girl were a rag doll.
No one really knew what to do...do we step in to help? ...do we approach her? That might make her angry and cause more of a problem. Yet, she might welcome the help. I mean, after all, we've all "been there" and would have probably loved for someone to step in to help. Anyway, about an hour or so went on with the baby crying, and crying, and the young mom struggling with her before a stewardess stepped in and offered the help we all thought about giving. Eagerly, the mom gave up her baby. And, once the child was up and out of the seat, she immediately stopped crying! The stewardess held the baby for about an hour, and we all got the much-needed sleep that we all needed....well...for an hour. Yet, all good things must come to an end and stewardesses are not babysitters, so an hour later the baby went back to mom and the crying started all over again. ...sigh...
The baby cried for another 2 hours and the gangster-mom got more and more frustrated. So much so that she started "thumping" the baby's mouth to try to shut her up. By "thumping" I mean forcefully hitting the baby's mouth as if she were pretending to be an Indian doing a war-call. That didn't work and the baby still cried. She next tried putting a blanket over the baby's head, practically smothering the baby, but the baby still cried.
We had all had enough, and as I sat there watching her torture the baby, I thought more and more about stepping in. However, I had Emily fast asleep on my lap and I hesitated moving Em because I didn't not want to wake her up and possibly have 2 babies crying.
There happened to be another young mother sitting in the same row as the gangster-mom, just across the aisle. She too was sitting in the middle seat between two businessmen. She was traveling alone with her son who is 9 months old. I had talked to her before the plane took off and we both exchanged how nervous we were flying with the babies, and hoped that our youngsters wouldn't keep everyone awake. Well, as I mentioned Emily fall asleep instantly, and so did her son. Well, once the stewardess gave the crying baby back to the other mom, and the baby started to cry again for yet another hour...we had all had about enough.
All of a sudden I see the mom with the son struggling to get out of her seat trying not to disturb the sleeping businessman sitting next to her. Yes, her 9-month-old-tank-of-a-son was in her arms sound asleep. She leans over to gangster-mom and says "Give me your baby." The gangster mom kind of looks dumbfounded and says "What?" and then the other mom says it again "Give me your baby." So, from the middle row, with a crying baby, she leans over and hands her screaming child to this perfect stranger. It wasn't an easy exchange because as I mentioned above, this mother was still holding her 9 month old son and was now attempting to ALSO carry this cranky 6 month old that didn't belong to her. She struggled a bit to balance herself with the weight of the two babies and the mild turbulence.
She started to walk toward the back of the plane and let the child calm down. As she passed our aisle, we knew that we needed to attempt to help. I mean after all, here was this new mom with a sound asleep 9 month old, attempting to do the right thing for the entire plane and settling this gangster-mom's-baby. She Lisa leaned over to her as she passed and said "Would you like me to hold your son?" Without hesitation, she handed Lisa her sleeping boy and continued toward the back of the plane with the cranky baby.
I'm sure as many of you would hope, that if you're taking a red-eye flight, you'd hope to get some sleep during the flight. Yet, this cranky baby prevented everyone in the back of the plane from getting any rest. This mom, who had her own child to deal with, was the only one to try to do anything about the situation. And, instead of sleep, as many of the passengers did after the baby stopped crying, she stood in the back of the plane for the remainder of the flight with another woman's crying baby. She stood there for about 3 hours...changed a poopy diaper...and even fed this now-no-longer-cranky baby. And...what did the gangster mom, who so easily gave up her own child, do??? - She slept.
The mother with the son, Lisa, Emily, and I were the last ones off the plane. We thanked her, on behalf of the plane, for stepping in and calming the cranky baby. She mentioned that she was getting so angry at the gangster-mother because it was obvious that the baby just wanted to get up and walk around. Yet, the mother wasn't willing to leave her seat and would have rather tried smothering her baby then walk around with her.
On our way off the stewardesses had asked about the situation and wanted to know if we were all together. We explained "no," that we had just met. They couldn't believe that we were all helping to play "musical babies" in an effort to do what the other mom wasn't willing to do...calm her own baby.

FIRED!!!
Today started yet another week of intense AST training for Chris. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Chris was appointed the new Assistant Class Leader...I also mentioned in an earlier post about the classmate that was kicked-out of school because he was drinking within 8 hours of his shift.
Well, Chris and the Main Class Leader were fired! They were fired because of this other guy's incompetence! The instructors felt that it was somehow the Class Leaders' fault that this moron was out drinking the night before...like they should have babysat him to make sure that he didn't break the rules?!?!? This other guy is old enough to take care of himself, and if he is too careless to go out drinking then he should be the only one to pay for it...right?
Well, not in the military. In the military, as a person in charge, you are responsible for everything and everyone beneath you. Therefore if something should happen "under your command" you are at fault! Your fault or not...they need someone to blame.
Anyway, so Chris was the Assistant Class Leader for...um...a little more then a week. Oh, and to top it off....THEY LET THE JACKASS BACK INTO THE CLASS!!!!
Don't know why. They kicked the drunk out of the class on Monday, but on Thursday they let him back in...??? TOTALLY NOT FAIR!! Oh, and you better believe that the class paid for it!!! When Friday came, and the drunk got back into class, the entire class paid for his mistakes by doing an INTENSE EXERCISE WORKOUT THAT DAY!!!!
No one is happy to see this kid come back into the program. I guess he is kind of the "Class Loser" anyway...But, life isn't fair. And, when it comes down to it, Chris just needs to survive the next few weeks of the program!
PS --- Lisa, Emily, and I are off to North Carolina on Thursday to visit Chris!! Stay tuned for pictures of our travels and pictures of Chris & Em (they haven't seen each other in 6 weeks!!)

11 Rescue Swimmers Started...Only 6 Remain...
Today ended as an important day for Chris. Today was a pass-or-fail test that Chris NEEDED to PASS in order to stay in the program. Last week they had a few tests that included saving a victim and putting them in a basket, on a backboard, and hoisting a violent victim using a strop (I think that's how you spell it...it's like a belt for the swimmer & victim) Well, Chris passed the basket test and the backboard test with no problems. However, last week, he hasn't passed the strop test.
If you've seen the movie The Guardian, there is a test situation in the movie exactly like what Chris is doing. About 1/2 way through, just after the jail scene, one of the candidates breaks the instructor's nose and causes him to bleed. This pool scenario is exactly like what Chris' test is like. It's not an easy test and most people fail out on this test.
Anyway, they did that test last week and the whole class failed. They all took the retest Monday and everyone passed, but Chris and one other guy. I guess in the first test last week, the "victim," which is actually an instructor, tried to drown Chris. Chris' mask slipped and he didn't get air when he came up for a breath. It was at that time that the "victim" took advantage of him and tried to drown him. Chris got water in his lungs and they eventually stopped the test and pulled Chris out of the water. Chris threw up all the water right after they pulled him out.
Monday was the retake and Chris did much worse. He says he's not quite sure what happened and that his subconscious overtook him. They were about 5 seconds into the test and the "victim" hit Chris' mask forcing him underwater...immediately after that Chris pinched the instructor which is a sign that he could not continue...and that automatically means he fails.
But today, Wednesday, Chris PASSED!!! The tests pregressively get harder the more chances you have taken. So, the victim was extremely violent!!! He was able to get loose from Chris a few times and Chris had to start over in order to regain control. 7 minutes were allotted for the test and Chris completed it in 6 minutes 50 seconds --- hey, passing is passing!!!
So, another test out of the way and Chris gets to continue with the program. Oh, the other guy that took his 3rd retest today failed again and is getting removed from the class. He was 19 years old, and if he would have graduated from school, he would have been the youngest guy EVER to graduate AST School! ...so sad...
So...the class started out with 11 Airmen in the program and they are now down to 6.

Drinking Doesn't Pay Off!!
So, Friday night one of the Airmen (AN) that is in the program with Chris went out into town, about 2 hour drive, and bellied up to a few bars for some beers. He knew he had to be back at the base early the next morning because they had to stand duty for a few hours Saturday morning. Well, him and a friend...who is actually the old Asst. Class Leader that quit the week prior...had a bit too much to drink and decided to get a hotel room in town rather then risk a D.U.I. (...good idea, right...???)
Well, they ended up oversleeping and he didn't make it back to the base in time for their Saturday morning Duty. Once the instructors were notified of his tardiness they were extremely upset. The guy only ended up being about 30 minutes late for his shift. He explained to the instructors that he went out drinking (which is ok) and that he felt the responsible thing to do was to get a hotel (which is also ok). But where he went wrong was that he was drinking within 8 hours of his shift, which is a BIG NO-NO!!
So, the following Monday he had to meet with the Senior Cheif who would determin the Airman's punishment for drinking within 8 hours of his shift.
........................And....they kicked him out of the program!!! --They're not messing around!!!
So, the class is down one more person. (7 left)
